A YORKSHIRE Dales road was closed for more than two hours after a two-car collision on Saturday.

At around 4.10pm, a Ford Fiesta and a Vauxhall Astra were involved in the crash, resulting in the Astra also hitting a drystone wall, at crossroads near Bellerby Camp, Moor Road, between Leyburn and Grinton.

North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, and Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended the scene.

The driver of the Fiesta, a 41-year-old man from Accrington, Lancashire, suffered a suspected fractured wrist and was taken to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

A 43-year-old woman from Accrington who was a passenger in the Fiesta suffered internal injuries in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at James Cook Hospital after being transported by air ambulance.

The driver of the Astra, a woman in her 60s from Darlington and her passenger, a 53-year-old man also from Darlington, both suffered back injuries in the incident, and the man was cut out of the car by fire crews and taken to hospital by road ambulance.

They were taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital and have since been discharged.

Fire engines from Leyburn and Richmond, along with a heavy rescue unit from Bishop Auckland, were called to the scene, and used hydraulic cutting equipment.

The road was reopened at around 6.15pm after the vehicles had been removed.

The junction has been the scene of several serious accidents in recent years.
