ONE of the region’s medieval castles will officially re-open its doors for the tourist season on Sunday, May 3.

Raby Castle, near Staindrop, in Teesdale, is inviting the public into the grounds until September and is kicking off the opening with the 15th annual Orchid Show from May 3 to May 4.

Raby Castle’s events manager, Rachel Milner said: “The good weather of the last month has meant more people are getting out and about, whether that be on days out or just in the garden at home.

“This year’s Orchid Show will include a small selection of local plant nurseries for the first time, selling not just orchids but garden plants too, so we’re hoping people will come out to find new plants, as well as orchids, for their gardens and inside their homes."

Miss Milner added: “Those familiar with the Orchid Show will still find orchid growers and sellers from around England and Europe, as well as displays from The North-East of England and Darlington Orchid Societies, we’ll also be holding a series of talks and lectures over the two days, and visitors will have the opportunity to ask for advice from the experts on how to make the most of their orchids.”

Admission to the Orchid Show is included in normal admission to the park and gardens and is free for those with a Raby Park and Gardens Season Ticket.
