A NORTH-EAST basketball team has been involved in a road traffic accident on their way to a match this evening.

Durham Wildcats, who play most of their games at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, were on their way to the capital for a match against London Lions when they were involved in a four-vehicle accident near Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire.

A spokesman for the British Basketball League said no members of the Wildcats party sustained serious injuries, but it is understood at least two players were taken to hospital.

A spokesman for the British Basketball League (BBL) the club had been unable to continue the journey on medical advice.

The BBL Championship game has been postponed, but the home fans will still be treated to an exhibition game for supporters.

A message posted on the Durham Wildcats Twitter page reads: "Thanks for all the wishes from the #basketballfamily ! Guys are all OK and have walked away with no serious injuries."
