PUB landlord Andy Hughes will lead his regulars and their four-legged friends on a sponsored walk around the churches of Durham City.

Mr Hughes, who runs the Angel Inn and the Elm Tree Inn in Crossgate, will step out on Sunday (April 19) to raise money for the international medical aid charity Medecines Sans Frontiers (MSF).

Mr Hughes organised the event with many of his drinkers but is welcoming other people and their dogs to join them.

The walkers will admire Durham’s heritage by visiting church buildings on a three-mile route though the city centre, ending with a free lunch at Christ Church on Claypath where soup and dog treats will be provided.

Melanie Eve, a member of Waddington Street United Reformed Church, which supports the charity, said: “We were delighted to find that people in the Elm Tree pub shared our support for this charity and want to help raise money for the work they do.

“I am a dog lover and delighted this sponsored walk will be open to anyone who wants to get involved.”

MSF provides treatment in areas affected by conflict and where there is no other clinic or hospital to turn to.

Just 17 pence can provide a child with vaccination against Measles, which currently kills one in five children.

Malaria kills over two million people per year, yet treatment costs 28 pence.

Anyone who wants to join the walkers and their dogs on Sunday can contact Mr Hughes at the pub on 0191 3864621 or turn up at the start at Waddington Street URC at 12.30pm on Sunday.
