LIBERAL Democrats in a North-East town have launched their 17-page manifesto ahead of next month's local elections.

The Lib Dems are the third-largest group on Labour-controlled Darlington Borough Council.

At a launch event at Darlington Cricket Club on Monday, the group unveiled a document attacking what it calls the Labour administration's "arrogance and 'we know best' attitude".

For its part, the local Labour group has robustly defended its record, despite repeated criticism from opponents.

The Lib Dems have failed to field candidates in every ward in Darlington for the election on May 7.

Group leader Anne-Marie Curry said three potential candidates had missed the nomination deadline meaning they were unable to stand.

The Lib Dems' manifesto pledges to show respect to individual citizens of Darlington.

It said: "We are committed to opening up the council and involving residents in the decision-making process. We

"will listen to what people have to say and take decisions which reflect the wishes of the community rather than the dictates of any one political party.

"We will never seek to impose our will on communities."

Cllr Curry said she was confident of a strong showing locally from her party on May 7 and tipped Harrowgate Hill ward – where candidates Chris Foote-Wood, Hilary Allen and Alan Leach will be going for the three available seats.

Other candidates in Harrowgate Hill are: Gill Cartwright (Con), Mike Cherrington (Green), Ian Ferguson (Con), Marjory Knowles (Lab), David Lyonette (Lab) and John Vasey (Lab)
