A DALES man has secured a stand at a world famous flower show.

Rug and carpet designer Brian Sales, from Frosterley, in Weardale, County Durham, will exhibit his silk and wool rugs at the Chelsea Flower Show in May.

It has taken his company Moorland Rugs about three years to finish the design and production process of the items, which will be viewed by royalty, celebrities and members of the public.

Local skilled workers, upholsterer Heidi Maddison, from Frosterley, and Wolsingham farrier, their nephew Phil Hodgson, have been enlisted to make the stand furniture.

Mr Sales' daughter Stephanie, 30, will be at the show the weekend before to help construct the stand.

The 62-year-old said: "A lot of hard work has gone into designing the rugs and the stand.

"The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), that produce the show, demand a high standard."

Each one of the hand-knotted floral rugs has been inspired from the exclusive archives of botanical paintings held within the RHS Lindley Library, in London.

Every rug has 200 knots per square inch, each tied by hand.

They are manufactured by highly-skilled workers at Choudhray, accredited weavers from the Jaipur region of India and are all made to order.

Mr Sales insisted the firm adheres to the Goodweave ethics ensuring decent working conditions.
