POWER distributor Northern Powergrid says it has now delivered its safety message about the dangers of live electricity to more than 30,000 youngsters across the region.

The company’s programme of free workshops and events has been rolled across schools in the North-East and Yorkshire in conjunction with other organisations such as the police and fire and rescue services.

Its ‘Crucial Crew’ and ‘Prison Me No Way’ events use displays, games and videos to inform children about the journey of electricity, the dangers, how to identify Northern Powergrid’s infrastructure, metal theft and what to do in an emergency.

The safety talks last up to an hour and are designed to be interactive and hands-on.

Leena Markovic, a school safety presenter at Northern Powergrid, said: “Delivering power safely to the 3.9 million customers we serve is our number one priority and our safety talks are a key part of ensuring youngsters stay safe near our extensive network of overhead power lines and substations.

“Through our programme, we’re able to teach young people about very real risks in a controlled setting, giving them the skills they need to take responsibility for their own safety and wellbeing as they grow.”
