POLICE have arrested and questioned a 16-year-old boy following an assault in Sunderland that left a teenager needing hospital treatment.

The incident happened between 11.15pm and 11.30pm on Saturday (March 28), in Tanfield Road, in the Thorney Close area of the city.

The victim, a 17-year-old youth, was approached in the street by a group of youths before being assaulted.

Northumbria Police said he received two minor puncture wounds, which were treated at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The victim was later released from hospital.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

He spent much of Sunday helping detectives with their inquiries.

Detective Sergeant Nick Lawrance, from Northumbria Police's major crime team, said: "We are urging anyone who witnessed this assault or believes they have information to assist our investigation to come forward.

"This appears to have been a dispute between people known to each other and I'd like to reassure people that we have made an arrest.

"We have officers patrolling in the area and anyone with concerns should speak to them."

Detectives are carrying out enquiries into the assault and are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with information.
