A CONTESTANT, mentored by singing legend Tom Jones on BBC’s The Voice, is urging young North-East musicians to come out of their shells and rock the Easter holidays.

School of Rock and Pop teacher Howard Rose won both the spinning chair auditions and battle rounds on this year’s hit music show narrowly missing out on a place in the semi finals.

But the 27-year old music teacher from Stockport, who now hopes his success will inspire other budding young singers and musicians to live their rock and roll dreams – starting this Easter holidays.

“Our aim at The School of Rock and Pop is to get talented young musicians out of their bedrooms and playing in a band,” he said.

“I hope that being on The Voice has inspired a lot of young people out there to pick up a musical instrument or sing because the enjoyment and rewards it can bring are incredible."

Wannabe musicians now have the opportunity to have their own rock star experience as The School of Rock and Pop opens its doors at Hummersknott Academy in Darlington on Tuesday, March 31, from 10am-3pm.

Student Mitchell Lowes, 16, attends the school and his tutor Pete McDonald said: “Mitchell initially joined our band as a drummer who was new to playing live music.

“Since starting his confidence and ability has grown so much so that he has now focused on fronting the band, playing bass and acoustic guitar."
