POLICE have detained a man under the mental health act after reports of a person on the line at Durham railway station.
Both Durham Police and British Transport Police were involved at the scene, near the city’s historic viaduct.
A spokesman for Virgin Trains East Coast said trains had been stopped in both directions on all lines running through Durham.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Our officers were called to Durham station to reports of a person on the tracks on Monday, 23 March.
"The call came into police shortly after 11.40am.
"Officers along with colleagues from Durham Constabulary attended the scene and a man was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital."
