A CHARITY is urging people to wear odd socks this month to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day.

The Education Centre for Children with Down syndrome (Eccds), in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, is encouraging nurseries, schools, colleges and businesses throughout the North-East to wear outrageously odd socks as part of the fundraising initiative on the 20th and 21st March.

The odd socks campaign aims to raise awareness of Down syndrome in a bright and colourful way, while securing vital funds to support children and their families through early intervention and specialist help and advice.

Maggie Hart, founder of Eccds, said: “It’s to show people with Down syndrome are different but the same. Our children want to be treated like everyone else. So reach out and get to know the person, not the condition.”

There are many imaginative ways to get involved, such as setting up a donation bucket for wearing odd socks, issuing a toll to those who wear matching socks or organising a sock puppet show.

The local community has already risen to the occasion with an entire street promoting the fundraiser. All of the businesses and both primary schools on Middle Street, Blackhall Colliery, near Hartlepool, are supporting the campaign.
