A CAR was left balancing precariously on a fence above a motorway after a suspected drink driver failed to negotiate a roundabout.

The vehicle was just inches away from toppling over a wooden fence and down a steep drop onto the A1M below, potentially causing a much more serious accident.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the scene just before 6am this morning (Sunday, March 1) at the A64 junction with the A1M at Bramham.

The driver, a 33-year-old man from York, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving by North Yorkshire Police, who were called to the scene just before 6am this morning.

It is believed the car ended up on the fence after failing to negotiate the roundabout at the motorway junction.

Officers with the roads policing group tweeted: "@NorthYorksRPG; Here's where the vehicle ended up. Other side of wooden fence is a steep drop onto motorway #couldhavebeenmuchworse"

A spokesman for the force said: “A man has been arrested and enquiries will be ongoing with the driver.”

The vehicle has been recovered and roads affected are now open.
