A COUPLE have been left devastated after they returned home from a family funeral to find their home ransacked and sentimental jewellery missing.

Alan and Linda Breden think they may have disturbed the thieves when they got back at about 10.30pm on Wednesday, February 18.

As they entered the bungalow, in Coundon, near Bishop Auckland, Mrs Breden said it was not obvious anything was wrong as the living room looked normal.

However, they then started to notice muddy footprints, electrical equipment out of place, the loft hatch was open and Christmas decorations had been scattered.

The couple discovered the thieves had taken a large selection of jewellery, including two engagement rings - a 14ct gold diamond solitaire ring and an 18ct platinum diamond cluster ring.

Other items missing are four pairs of gold earrings, a 14ct gold ankle bracelet, a silver Egyptian star necklace, a gents Ted Baker watch and a gents Accurist watch.

“We had been to a funeral in Sunderland so didn’t get back until late,” said Mrs Breden. “Normally when we get in the dog runs up to greet us but this didn’t happen.

“Then we started to notice these big muddy footprints.

“There was a terrible mess in the bedrooms and it was obvious they had been up in the attic. They had managed to get up there without using a ladder so there must have been at least two of them.

“They had thrown some of the Christmas decorations down.”

She said: “We don’t really have anything valuable. Most of the things that have been taken are fashion jewellery. I have lost my engagement ring and the one belonging to my grandmother. These are the two things I really want back. They are of sentimental value.”

It is believed the thieves used a pillow case off the spare bed to carry the stolen goods.

Mrs Breden added: “We think we might have disturbed them and they have run out the back door when we have come home.

“It was awful to come home to after a funeral, especially with all the mess. It would be lovely to get the rings back.”
