FRIENDS will pay tribute to a much-loved comedian and charity worker at a special event later this year.

Veteran entertainer Hughie Malone, from Consett, died aged 80 in November.

A tribute evening celebrating his life is to be held at the Empire Theatre in Consett, where he trod the boards for more than 60 years, most famously as the panto dame in performances by Consett Citizens Choir.

In 2006, he was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his community and charity work.

Pat Holmes, chair of the Friends of Consett Empire, said: "Hughie was such a consummate professional and this concert will be a fitting tribute while we all remember the good memories we have from over the years"

Among the acts taking part will be Consett Citizens Choir, The CBS Music and Stage Society and Jane Robson and Pauline Cook Dance Schools.

David Paull assistant manager at the Empire said “You never saw him without a smile on his face and he was such a genuine person.

“We look forward to welcoming Hughie’s family and friends to this remembrance concert.

Remembering Hughie Malone MBE takes place at Consett Empire Theatre on Thursday, June 18 at 7pm.

Tickets are on sale now from the Box Office on 01207 218171, priced £8 or £5 for children.

A photographic exhibition of his career will be on display in the foyer from June 15 – 18.
