TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular owner of a renowned independent store which attracts wine connoisseurs from across the country.

Doug Campbell, owner of Campbells of Leyburn, died on Thursday, February 5 after a long battle with cancer. He was 54.

He was the fifth generation of his family to run the supermarket which has been trading since 1868.

The store has won numerous accolades including the Flavours of Herriot Country award for specialist retailer in 2011 and 2012.

The shop also reached the final of the National Retail Awards in 2010.

Richard Sanderson, chairman of Leyburn and Mid Wensleydale Business Association, said Mr Campbell was a great supporter of the town, of the association and of him personally as chair.

He added: "It's a very sad day for Leyburn.

"Doug was very generous and would always help out if we needed something.

"The store has an excellent reputation. Doug told me he had customers who would come up from the south of England to have a day out at stock up on wine at the store.

"I'm sure the business will continue as they have an excellent manager in Richard (Walker)."

Mr Campbell was a keen squash player and formed a team with close friend Ifty Ahmed which started in the Yorkshire League's bottom division, but went on to play in the premier division.

He said: "Doug was probably the most genuine and thoroughly decent man I have ever met in my life.

"In 25 years I never heard him say a bad word about anyone.

"He has such a dry sense of humour - he only had to say a word and it would make you laugh. His passing is so unfair and very, very sad."

Leyburn town councillor Bernard Borman also paid tribute to Mr Campbell.

He said: “Doug Campbell was a very kind and always helpful member of the community. He has done much to put Leyburn on the map - we shall all miss him greatly."

Mr Campbell leaves behind wife Kath, son Matt and daughter Beth.

His funeral will be held at St Matthew's Church, Leyburn, at 1pm on Tuesday, February 17.
