A SCHEME to prescribe books for people living with dementia is being backed by Stockton Council.

The Reading Well Books on Prescription for dementia scheme supports sufferers, and their carers, to have a better understanding of the illness and its challenges.

From Monday, February 2, 25 titles will be available at Stockton Council's libraries to provide information and advice following a dementia diagnosis.

They offer guidance on early memory loss along with practical help for carers with suggested activities to help people remain active and independent for as long as possible.

Councillor Jim Beall, Stockton Council’s cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “This scheme is a welcome opportunity for our libraries to play a significant role in helping to build a dementia-friendly community across the Stockton borough.

“Better awareness and understanding of the condition is sorely needed so I would urge anyone wanting to learn more about dementia to visit their local library and ask about the Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme.”

Displays dedicated to the scheme will be at five libraries in the borough, Stockton Central, Billingham, Thornaby Central, Norton and Yarm and the books will be available at Billingham, Thornaby and Stockton Central libraries.

Request orders for books can also be made at any branch across the borough, where leaflets and posters offering more information on the scheme can also be found.
