A BUS company is investigating how one of its vehicles careered into a bus station, smashing the windows and leaving a hole in the roof.

An Arriva single decker crashed into Middlesbrough Bus Station on Newport Road this morning (Monday, February 2) at about 8.30am, smashing nine window panes.

The Middlesbrough-to-Lingdale bus was carrying two passengers, but no-one was hurt.

Nick Knox, managing director for Arriva North-East, said: "We can confirm that a bus struck one of the stands at Middlesbrough Bus Station this morning.

"There were no reported injuries and we are currently investigating the incident in order to understand exactly what happened.”

Cleveland Police were called to the scene at about 8.45am. A spokeswoman said: "A Volvo single decker Arriva Bus had struck the bus station. The bus driver was injured, and it was recorded as a damage only road traffic collision."

Dave Brierley, manager of the bus station, said: "It looks like it was just an accident, but the incident is now in the hands of Arriva. Thankfully nobody was hurt in the incident."

It was business as usual at the bus station, which remained open, while the damaged area was cordoned off to keep passengers safe.
