A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson following an early morning fire in a YMCA apartment in Darlington.

The fire broke out at about 2.20am this morning and one woman and two men were trapped inside the burning first floor flat on Middleton Street.

Two fire engines from Darlington and one from Newton Aycliffe were despatched to deal with the blaze and all three people were rescued without serious injury.

The fire was extinguished by crews using three hose reels and an 18-year-old woman was taken for hospital for treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation.

She was released within hours and arrested by police on suspicion of arson.

She remains in police custody whilst officers work with the fire investigations until to establish the events surrounding the incident.
