A MAN who started fundraising in memory of his friend's wife has handed over a cheque for more than £14,000 to Teesside Hospice.

Colin Callaby decided to support the charity in 2009 via his annual fundraising night at Middlesbrough's The Southern Cross, which features local talent and music.

He said: “After several years of just being a party for friends I realised the potential to raise money. Teesside Hospice had been active in the care of the wife of my good friend Bill O’Brien and together we decided it was a worthy recipient.”

The most recent charity event took place on Sunday, December 21 at Marton Country Club and raised £14,105.

The evening featured Patrick Monahan, winner of Channel 4’s ‘Show me the Funny’, X Factor singing duo Journey South and 60s singing group The Delmonts.

Over the past six years Mr Callaby's annual charity events have raised £44,727 in aid of Teesside Hospice, which goes directly towards providing care to local people suffering from advanced cancer and other life limiting illnesses.

Leanne Irvine, community fundraiser at Teesside Hospice, said: “We are delighted with how much Colin and his close circle of friends have raised through their annual event. A great big thank you to Colin and everyone involved.”
