COLOURFUL light installations, fire dancers and crisp white snow transformed a primary school into a magical winter wonderland.

Hundreds of people braved the cold to attend a Lumiere-style light festival at Vane Road Primary School in Newton Aycliffe tonight (Thursday, January 29).

Wrapped up against the cold, proud pupils guided their parents and relatives around the lit up playground showcasing their illuminated creations along the way.

From colourful stained glass windows and paper lanterns, to Egyptian art and castles made from milk bottles, there were more than 20 eye-catching displays to marvel at.

Artwork created by pupils at nearby Woodham Academy was also incorporated into the festival and fire dancers amazed visitors with their dramatic routines.

Kieran Pavey, headteacher, said the project had brought together the whole school and had touched upon all parts of the curriculum, most notably art, history and science.

“This is the second year we have done it and this time we wanted to incorporate even more areas of the curriculum,” he said.

“The children have loved it and have really enjoyed pointing out their displays to their families. This is the first time we have seen it all lit up at night and it is quite a sight to behold.”
