THE Beacon in Redcar is set to beat the winter blues and enjoy a cozy Valentine's Day when a group of knitters create a scarf to wrap round the distinctive building.

Members of Redcar and Cleveland Mind's Knit and Natter group came up with the idea to raise money for the charity, which runs the Something in Mind cafe and shop in the town.

Usually they raise funds by making various items including hats, scarves and teddy bears, but this time they are being slightly more ambitious by creating the scarf from dozens of individual squares.

After the event the squares will be cleaned and sewn together to make blankets, which will be donated to another charitable cause.

Nick Murray, social enterprise coordinator at R&C Mind, said: “People often share Valentine’s Day with their loved one and now they can share their sentiments with Redcar and the surrounding area, whilst raising money for their local Mind.

“We hope the project will catch peoples’ imagination and attract people from far and wide to see the scarf and attach their message. We are open six days a week so people have plenty of opportunity to sponsor the scarf.”

The initiative will be letting people either ‘sponsor’ a square within the scarf for £10 or attach a message to a loved one for just £3.

Anyone who would like to contribute to the knitting of the scarf should head down to Something in Mind, located just off the high street on West Dyke Road, on a Tuesday afternoon.
