A WOMAN who has worked tirelessly to protect young people from alcohol misuse has been honoured by police.

Education worker Joanne Boyd has been presented with a commendation by Durham’s Chief Constable Mike Barton for her dedicated work in schools and youth clubs.

Mrs Boyd works with 4Real, the County Durham Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Service.

Sgt Mick Urwin, of the force’s alcohol harm reduction unit, praised her invaluable work in getting across messages to young people about the risks and consequences of alcohol misuse.

He said: “Having worked with her for the last few years, I have witnessed her outstanding enthusiasm, commitment and dedication.

“She often works unsocial hours to attend events, or provide support to local neighbourhood policing teams for Staysafe operations, during which we carry out brief intervention work with young people who are intoxicated, or in possession of alcohol.

Sgt Urwin added: “Without Joanne essential messages would be harder to deliver – she is very well thought of by young people and professionals alike.

“She has been awarded a chief constable’s commendation in recognition of all her hard work.

“These accolades are not routinely given to people who are not part of the police service, which is an indication of how valuable her work is regarded by the constabulary.”
