A FOOTBALL inspired employability programme is helping jobseekers in the area find work.

Residents living in Shildon, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland and Spennymoor took part in the course which finished last week.

Supported by livin Futures, Back in the Game is aimed at giving unemployed people the skills, confidence and qualifications to help enhance their job prospects.

Held at livin’s community facility Foundations, in Church Street, Shildon, the course gives those aged over 19 to take part in a variety of exercises designed to develop their skills, attitude and physical fitness.

One participant said the course had given her the confidence to get back into the community and helped her secure a part-time job.

“Back in the Game has given me the confidence to get back out there and feel more involved, like I used to be.

“The course has had a big impact on me and has helped me gain a part time job,” she said.

Alan Boddy, of livin, added: “The Back in the Game programme supports people to maximise their potential and improve their prospects by using fun, healthy and innovative ways of learning.”

As part of the programme, jobseekers also completed a two-week work placement with a range of local businesses including livin, the Pioneering Care Partnership and the Territorial Army.

Participants also achieved nationally-recognised qualifications in work skills, numeracy, literacy and first aid.

The next Back in the Game course, in Shildon, is due to take place on Monday, January 19.
