Vinyl reviews: Dexter Gordon/Soy Califa (Gearbox Records GB1526) This Danish tv recording captures the tenor player in live performance at Magleaas High School in summer 1967. It features Dex with his current band from Copenhagen’s Montmartre Club – Kenny Drew piano, Niels-Henning Ørsted Petersen bass and Al Heath drums. The half hour set features Soy Califa, The Shadow of Your Smile and Gordon’s party piece, Blues Up and Down with everyone in their best form. Like all Gearbox Records it’s on top quality vinyl with beautifully quiet surfaces, great sleeve notes which set the scene and a code for a free download.

Nucleus with Leon Thomas/Live 1970 (Gearbox GB1529) Ian Carr’s jazz-rock band Nucleus hit an early peak in 1970, winning the Montreux Jazz Festival international jazz band contest. That same day they recorded this set with Leon Thomas, blues, scat and protest singer with a distinctive yodel, who they’d previously supported at Ronnie Scott’s Club.

As we can now hear for the first time on this double LP, everyone was in stunning form with striking solos from Carr on trumpet and flugelhorn, Karl Jenkins on oboe especially and piano, Brian Smith saxes and flute and Chris Spedding guitar with an always-propulsive drive from Jeff Clyne’s bass and John Marshall’s drums.

Alyn Shipton’s notes take you right back and guide you through the music.
