A SCHOOL commemorated the First World War in its own way – by handing out packets of jelly babies.
Pupils at Heworth Grange Secondary School, Gateshead, handed out the sweets on Armistice Day, which were originally called ‘Unwanted Babies’ when introduced in 1864.
In 1918, they were renamed ‘Peace Babies’ by makers Bassett of Sheffield to celebrate the end of the First World War, with each colour representing a country which fought in the conflict.
Pupils designed a Peace Babies' label for the 1,500 bags of sweets that were handed out to pupils and people in the local community.
Head teacher Chris Richardson said: “This is a unique method of commemorating the First World War. Recreating a little-remembered celebration of the end of war is a great way of bringing the act of remembrance alive.”
