A WOMAN has suffered serious leg injuries after being hit by a heavy goods lorry at on the A174 at Sandsend, near Whitby.

The 66-year-old woman from the Goole area was hit by the HGV at about 5.30pm on Thursday, October 30, on the bridge outside the Hart Inn.

She suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and is in a stable condition.

The driver of the HGV, a 64-year-old man from York, was uninjured.

The stretch of road was closed until 12.30am today (Friday) while the scene was investigated.

North Yorkshire Police's Traffic Constable Gareth Gilleard is appealing for witnesses to contact the police as soon as possible on 101, select option 2 and ask for Mark Hutchings.
