A TOWN’S war memorial has been restored in time for a special service to mark the outbreak of the First World War.

Tow Law’s memorial statue of a soldier in uniform was built in 1921 by a local builder.

Specialists were brought in to restore the marble and stone memorial, and work was completed earlier this week.

Councillor John Hart said: “I think with it being the anniversary of the break out of the First World War a lot of people it was more important than ever that we show our gratitude to the people of Tow Law and the surrounding areas who made the ultimate sacrifice.

He added: “I always make sure I visit the local cenotaph on Armistice Day and I am so proud to be Tow Law’s councillor. Every year the roads are closed and everybody makes the effort to come out of their homes to take part in the service.”

Local resident and Royal Legion member Colin Hayton added: “I have lived here for 26 years and although the memorial has been cleaned it has never been restored. It’s great to see it restored to its former glory.”
