A NEWCASTLE United fan is fighting for his life after falling in front of a train before his team’s match at Tottenham at the weekend.

Darren White was critically injured when he was hit by a train at Bexleyheath station in south-east London.

Emergency services were called to reports of a man on the line at around 7.30am on Sunday (October 26).

He was taken to King’s College Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

It has been reported the 41-year-old was dragged by the train after apparently collapsing on the platform of the station.

Mr White, a caretaker at East Durham College, usually travels to away games by coach with other fans on a bus. But he is believed to have travelled to London on Friday to visit friends before the game.

He was on his way to meet fellow fans when the incident happened.

Mr White, of Peterlee, has worked at the college for over 12 years in the estates and services department as part of the caretaking team.

The college’s director of estates and services, Jim Blower, said: “Everyone at the college has been deeply shocked by the news of Darren’s accident at the weekend.

“Darren is a well-respected member of the estates team and he’s really well-liked around the College.

“Our thoughts are with Darren and his family, and we will do everything we can to support Darren during his recovery.”

A BTP spokesman said: “The full circumstances of the incident are still under investigation and officers would like to speak to anyone who was at the station at the time, but has not yet come forward to police.

“Anyone with information is asked to call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting incident reference 106 of October 26.”
