POLICE have arrested two youths for throwing things from a bridge onto cars and lorries passing below.

Several incidents have been reported in the last few months on the busy A1-Western Bypass between Lemington and Gosforth, Newcastle.

the Newcastle North West Neighbourhood Policing Team is running operations to catch the culprits and prevent further incidents.

Inspector Dave Culverwell, of the team, said: "I want to stress the dangers these actions can cause and hopes this serves as a warning that it is not a game - you are putting lives at risk, including your own.

"A bridge is not a place to play or hang out. Hanging over a railing to throw stones is not safe and anyone could easily fall over.

"You are also putting drivers lives at risk. If you throw any object it could not only smash their windscreen, this could also cause a serious collision.

"We will be carrying out operations in hotspot areas. This is a serious offence and I warn anyone caught in the act, or believed to be responsible for any incidents, that we will take action against them and ensure they are put before the courts."

Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour is a priority set in Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird's Police and Crime Plan.

The Commissioner said: "We must all work together to tackle the actions of a minority of people whose behaviour can impact on neighbourhood confidence.

"If anyone sees any anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood they must report it to the police who will work with them and other partners to tackle the issue."
