ALMOST 2,000 young people attended an interactive careers event today (Thursday, October 23) which looked to promote their employability skills.

Pupils from 20 schools visited The Get a Buzz ‘Have a Go’ Day at The Durham Centre, in Belmont, Durham, where they met 40 representatives from different employment sectors including the media, police and manufacturing.

The event saw young people aged between 14 and 25 involved with various activities ranging from catering to falconry, and aimed to inspire them with regards to their future careers.

Madelaine Remington, one of the co-organisers, said: “There’s nobody here that isn’t doing anything. It’s not like a normal careers fair where you just go round picking pieces of paper up, and these young people are clearly pleased about that.

“The impact we’re having is we’re changing employer’s methods of how they communicate with young people, and vice versa.”

More than 30 volunteers were involved in ensuring the day ran smoothly, which also featured The Skills Show On The Road’s bus, on which visitors can take part in educational challenges and obtain advice on employment and their future.

Jill Goddard, from Find a Future, the charity responsible for the bus, said: “The idea is that young people come in, have a go at activities and then talk to employers and advisers. We give them inspiration to start thinking about different skills, and making those skills come alive.”
