THOUSANDS of bulbs have been planted by a team of young volunteers who want to give their community a blast of colour.

Children from Chilton Primary School planted daffodil and tulip bulbs along the north end of the town ready to burst into flower next spring.

They were joined by the Mayor of Chilton, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce, who also dug deep to help brighten up the neighbourhood.

The bulbs planted today (Wednesday, October 22) were among thousands which Chilton Town Council has planted throughout the town each year.

Town clerk Paul Gray said: “We invite the children to help to give them a bit of practical experience and to be part of their community, they can be proud when the bulbs come up and they can see where they have been working.

“This is about the sixth year we’ve done this and are moving to different parts of the town, as they are bulbs it means a one off payment and they grow year after year.”

This year, Chilton won two awards at Northumbria in Bloom- a silver gilt award in the small town category and a silver award for its cemetery.
