RESIDENTS have joined forces with council staff to take part in a community clean up day.

A total of 23 volunteers began cleaning up a public walkway at Shotton at 10am, and managed to collect 19 bags of rubbish.

Durham County Council’s “Clean and Green” team also removed fly-tipped items including chairs, tyres, three-piece suites and broken musical instruments.

The event, which was arranged by Shotton Residents’ Association, saw staff from the council’s “Clean and Green” team clear rubbish which had been fly-tipped on public walkways.

Pauline Walker, Durham County Council’s senior Civic Pride officer, said: “We are delighted with the number of volunteers, residents and representatives from partner organisations who gave up their time at the community clean-up event in Shotton.”

“Their hard work and willingness to make a difference and help clean up the area for local residents demonstrated a real pride for the local environment and we thank everyone involved for their efforts.”
