THIS is the moment a man who had his arm ripped off by his own dogs was led away by police after his animals were at the centre of a fresh incident.


The Northern Echo captured the drama following a dog attack in which a 63-year-old man was savaged and seriously hurt, between the Belmont area of Durham City and nearby Low Pittington. 

Residents had complained to police when they saw dog breeder Stephen Potts walking several of the powerful American bulldogs just days after he was discharged from hospital.


But they were told officers were powerless to do anything as they dogs were not classified as dangerous. 


At just after 1pm officers were called to Coniston Close area of Belmont following a report of a man being attacked by dogs. 


Police said Mr Potts was walking six dogs when they began fighting with a Staffordshire bull terrier, also being walked by its owner - a 63-year-old man from Belmont, who was injured during the incident.


He was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham (UHND) with injuries to his limbs and head. His condition is described as serious. A woman was also injured with bites to her hand.


Immediately afterwards, a local woman walking nearby was also hurt by one of the dogs. She was taken to UHND with leg injuries.


A spokesman said a 48-year-old man from Low Pittington was arrested in connection with the incident. He isbeing questioned by officers at Durham City police station.
