DOCUMENTS relating to the death of a solicitor who suffered fatal stab wounds while jogging in Durham City have been handed to his family.

Detectives handed a bundle of evidence to the wife of Peter Maine, 56, yesterday (Monday, September 29) as the investigation to establish his cause of death continues.

The father-of-two died from three stab wounds to his chest while jogging on a gravel path near Maiden Castle sports ground last September.

Police initially launched a murder-style investigation to track down potential witnesses but, at an inquest review earlier this year, Detective Chief Inspector Steve Chapman said the wounds may have been self inflicted.

At a further review in Crook this morning (Tuesday, September 30) County Durham coroner Andrew Tweddle was given an update on how the investigation was progressing.

Coroner’s officer Jacqueline Sirrell said: “A file of papers has been prepared by the police and disclosed to the family yesterday.

“Mrs Maine has asked some time to consider the paperwork before the matter is brought back for a future review.”

Mr Tweddle scheduled another review for Wednesday, November 26.

Police officers identified 61 possible witnesses who were in the Maiden Castle Sport’s Centre area of Durham City between 7.15am and 8.15am on September 1 last year when Mr Maine, of Swainston Close in Wynyard near Billingham, suffered the fatal injuries.

More than 100 of the solicitor’s friends and associates were spoken to, as well as people related to a criminal investigation into mortgage fraud with which Mr Maine is alleged to have been involved.

Information about the incident can be reported to Durham Police on 101.
