THERE was a heavy police presence at a Newton Aycliffe school earlier this week (Thursday, September 25) but parents need not be alarmed.

For the blue lights and sirens at St Joseph’s RC Primary School on Thursday (September 25) were due to a police fun day.

Teaching assistant Sharon Walker wanted to host a fun afternoon for pupils to educate them on the varied roles within Durham police.

She worked with PCSO Chris Noble, of the Newton Aycliffe neighbourhood police team, throughout the summer to organise the event.

The force sent a patrol car, motorbike officer from the traffic team, a quad bike from the rural crime initiative Farmwatch and canine cops Jet and Ben in the dog section van.

A highlight for most children was when they heard the force helicopter approaching the school and watched in amazement as it landed on the playing field.

Miss Walker said: “It was great for the children to get some hands-on experience of sitting in the various police vehicles, trying the sirens, finding out how fast and loud they are.

“It was so exciting for them and as they spoke to the officers they asked lots of good questions and were really interested in their jobs.

“I think they gained a greater awareness of police work, it is good for them to learn about and respect the world around them.

“We really appreciate what the police did and I heard children say it was magical and the best day ever so hopefully it will be a really memorable event.”
