A NORTH-East woman who survived breast cancer more than 35 years ago is to take to the catwalk for a celebrity fashion show to launch Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Helen Haydock, 67, from Hurworth, near Darlington, is one of 24 men and women who have received a breast cancer diagnosis asked to take part in the annual show on October 1, which will feature work by Stella McCartney, Jenny Packham and Temperley London.

Mrs Haydock was diagnosed with cancer 37 years ago and has volunteered with Breast Cancer Care since she retired in 2007.

She said: "When I was diagnosed there was a complete lack of support and information and I wish Breast Cancer Care’s services had been available to me then.

"I have since lost two close family members to breast cancer but I have been privileged to have two children and two grandchildren and enjoy life with family and friends.

"I'm looking forward to taking part in the show because it will give me a chance to say 'I'm still here and breast cancer doesn't define me'."

Ahead of the show at Grosvenor House, in London, Mrs Haydock took part in a photo shoot with Julia Boggio, in preparation for her starring role.

Samia al Qadhi, chief executive at Breast Cancer Care, said: “Everyone at Breast Cancer Care is so excited to see our inspiring models take to the catwalk in front of their friends and families, celebrating life after a breast cancer diagnosis.

"This brilliant event will be a lovely opportunity for the models to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience, while also raising vital funds to help Breast Cancer Care, as the only UK-wide specialist information and support charity, reach even more people facing this devastating disease.”
