PATRIOTIC music and flag-waving was the order of the day when hundreds of people attended an outdoor proms event in a North-East park.

Timed to coincide with the Last Night of the Proms, the free Proms in the Park gathering, in South Park, Darlington, on Saturday (September 13) evening, was judged a great success.

Described by one audience member as 'Darlington at its best', the line-up included the Royal Signal (Northern) Band, Hurworth Concert Band, Newton Aycliffe Pipe and Drums and the Central and East Yorks Wing ATC band, as well as a string of guest vocalists.

Proms in the Park events were held at venues across the UK during the culmination of the BBC Proms season.

Thousands of people attended concerts in Swansea, Belfast and Glasgow.

This year's Darlington proms night, although not affiliated to the BBC Proms, was sponsored by Darlington-based subsea technology company Modus Seabed Intervention and held to raise funds for the Army Benevolent Fund.

The Darlington version of Proms in the Park was the idea of former mayor Charles Johnson, who held the event in 2013 as part of his efforts to promote civic pride in the town.

Last year's concert was such a resounding success that it was repeated on Saturday night, to coincide with the televised Last Night of the Proms, at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
