A GIRL fighting a rare and aggressive cancer is set to write a book with her mother about their experiences.

Gaby Alderson's mother, Vicki, said the book will detail the worst time of their lives after her daughter was diagnosed with MYCN-amplified stage four neuroblastoma last year.

Last month, doctors at Leeds General Infirmary said biopsies on Gaby's bone marrow revealed only a small amount of neuroblastoma cells remained following numerous rounds of chemotherapy.

Since being told she was nearing remission, Gaby, of South Otterington, near Northallerton, has lost weight and has been suffering panic attacks.

Her family have also been told 80 per cent of children with neuroblastoma of Gaby's age who go into remission relapse within two years.

They are appealing for fundraisers to help finance treatment that is unavailable on the NHS in that event.

Mrs Alderson, who is backing a drive to highlight awareness of childhood cancer, said: "We have so much to say, this is a battle worth writing about.

"This time last year I was standing at the door of the children's oncology clinic at Leeds with a look of absolute disbelief and horror on my face.

"I could see the sympathising looks from some of the parents who knew we were just starting on a horrendous journey.

"I remember hiding in the toilets and being so overcome with grief and uncontrollable anger I just could not process what was happening."

She said at the time she couldn't begin to imagine how Gaby was feeling about having her life turned upside down.

"I have images in my head of Gaby suffering so much, being in so much pain and petrified, they will be there always.

"Yes they upset me, but they also make me realise what an absolute warrior she is. "Never whinging or moaning she is amazing, totally totally amazing.

"All of the families we have met through this journey, with their warrior kids, all fighting the same fight, all with the same gutsy determination, I will never forget.

"I am so thankful to have met them all, this community, all helping and being there for each other.

"And to those whose children gained their angel wings, too early, my heart absolutely breaks for them."
