A BODY discovered in the River Wear yesterday afternoon is believed to be that of an elderly man who was reported missing from home earlier in the day.

Police were called to reports of a body in the river near to Framwelgate Bridge, in Durham City, at around 3 pm yesterday.

A spokesperson for Durham police has this morning confirmed the body is thought to be that of 78-year-old Robert Porter.

Mr Porter was reported missing in the early hours of yesterday by staff at the supported living facility, in Spennymoor, where he resided.

A post mortem examination will be carried out later today and a formal identification will follow.

Durham police said the death at this stage is being treated as non-suspicious.
