AN outdoor swimming pool is seeking funding for an urgent upgrade of its heating system.

In recent years, the boilers that heat Weardale Open Air Swimming Pool in Stanhope have broken down on numerous occasions, with one of the four having failed completely.

The popular tourist attraction is open 100 days per year and, as the end of the season approaches, the volunteers that run the pool have been looking at how they can improve the heating system.

Peter Thompson, chairman of Stanhope Pool Ltd, said: “Boilers are essential for the pool to function and the existing boilers have come to the end of their working life. Rather than just replacing them like-for-like, we want a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.”

Tyneside-based experts Opus Green has recommended installing two energy efficient condensing boilers and 38 solar PV panels at a cost of £35,000.

Stanhope Pool Ltd has asked Durham County Council, which supports the pool, for a £20,000 contribution and will cover the remainder of the costs using its reserves.

Mr Thompson will meet with council staff later this month to discuss the options.
