FOLK club members will pay heed to events in Scotland when they meet later this month.

Durham City Folk Club is staging an evening of Scottish folk songs at its gathering on Thursday September 18, the day of the independence referendum north of the Border.

Club regular Melanie Eve said it was noted that the club night just happened to coincide with the momentous day the Scots go to the polls to decide if the country remains in the union.

“We love both English and Scottish folk songs, and we thought that this was perfect timing for a night to think about Scotland.”

Club chairman Ian McCulloch said: “We won’t be taking sides in the vote, we just want to enjoy good songs, well sung together.

“It’s a significant day that puts an end to a question, or an era, depending on the outcome.

“That is the way folk singers recognise events of this kind.”

The club is inviting anyone who enjoys folk with a Scottish theme to join in the singing.

It takes place at the regular club venue, The Tap and Spile pub, in Front Street, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, from 8.30pm.
