THE public is getting a rare chance to see the Royal Family as seen through the lens of one of Britain’s most renowned photographers.

The late Patrick Lichfield – the professional name of the 5th Earl of Lichfield – was the first cousin once-removed to the Queen and was frequently invited to photograph the Windsors.

Now Beningbrough Hall, the National Trust property near York, is hosting an exhibition of his work featuring formal occasions and the informal moments for which he was so notable.

General manager David Morgan said: “As a member of the family, Lichfield connected with the Royals in a way that other photographers perhaps couldn’t.

“His photographs give a fascinating glimpse into the world of Royalty, and alongside our current display of ‘Royals: then and now,’ they capture a much more relaxed style than how the Royal Family have been portrayed over the centuries.”

The show is being held in collaboration with Lichfield Studios in London. It runs from tomorrow, September 2 and continues until November 2 and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Normal admission rates apply and free entry to National Trust members.
