CHARITY fund-raisers really put their backs into it when they took part in a lorry-pull.

About 20 people signed up to drag the loaded truck weighing more than four tons across the car park of the New Durham Workingmen’s Club in Gilesgate, Durham City.

The event was held to raise money for five-year-old Leon MacDonald who was born with spina bifida and cannot use his legs.

He would love to be able to play on a bike like his friends but cannot use an ordinary machine so a group has been raising the £2,060 to buy a hand-pedalled bike that will enable him to do so and help build his upper body strength.

Fund-raisers also hope to raise money to pay for adaptations to Leon’s home.

The truck-pull was organised by John Appleby, who said: “We are also hoping to put down some decking in his garden so he can go out and play.

“People have been unbelievable, they have really supported the fund.

“When I went to his house he had all these Eddie Stobart toys out. He is mad about lorries so that gave me the idea.

“I managed to pull the lorry 50 yards but it took it out of me.”

The lorry-pull was followed by a charity night in the club featuring entertainment from a singer and a comedian and raffle of prizes, including celebrity items.
