AN ELDERLY woman has died following a road crash.

The smash happened on the westbound A690 dual carriageway at East Rainton, between Durham and Sunderland, at about 12.10pm today (Friday, August 29).

The driver of one of the vehicles, an 81-year-old woman, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City, but pronounced dead.

Police are informing her loved ones and no further details have yet been released.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

The road was closed for around three hours while the emergency services dealt with the collision.

An investigation has begun. Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101, quoting reference 435 29/08/14.
