A NEW charity store has opened its doors with ‘Something in Mind’ for everyone.

The Redcar and Cleveland branch of the mental health charity Mind has developed a low carbon store that will focus on their mantra of ‘Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose’.

At its heart, is a café that will provide homemade and affordable food for visitors to the store on West Dyke Road, Redcar.

The town’s prospective Labour Party candidate Anna Turley and South Middlesbrough and East Cleveland MP Tom Blenkinsop officially opened the store when they cut the ribbon.

Veronica Harnett, the branch’s chief executive, said: “The income from this new venture will allow Redcar and Cleveland Mind’s support services to be sustainable and grow.

“At the heart of what we do, are our volunteers and placements. We want to improve people’s health, help them gain confidence and improve social skills.

“We increase their employability by providing on the job experience and training, leading to recognised qualifications in food hygiene, retailing, catering & hospitality and customer care. "Our PREP project (Prisoner Rehabilitation and Engagement Programme) continues to go from strength-to-strength.”

The charity also focuses on using as many of the donated goods as they can and often recycle material and give things a makeover to make to ensure they can be sold on.

Volunteer Ron Storey, who has benefitted from the charity’s work, said: “I have earned the respect of staff and customers alike and I now feel positive about my future. I’m working hard and want to give something back to the community.”
