A SPECIAL service marked the start of a day of events to celebrate the arrival of the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster into the region.

Reverend Colin Lingard led the service at Durham Tees Valley Airport and paid tribute to those who lost their lives during the Second World War.

Northern Echo editor, Peter Barron, thanked all those who supported the campaign to have a permanent memorial to Canadian airman Andrew Mynarski placed at the site.

The Mynarski Memorial Lancaster arrived into Durham Tees Valley Airport yesterday after and today hundreds are enjoying a celebration day in homage to the historic craft - one of the only two airworthy Lancasters in the world.

It is due to perform a flypast at 3pm today.
