A NEWLY formed Polish football team have set their sights on winning a league title after being scouted by a North-East club.

The team, made up of captain Kamil Kuleszo and his Polish friends, used to play football recreationally in Darlington’s South Park.

But now the squad, aged from 16 to 28, are making an impression in the Teesside League second division, having won every game they have played so far.

They were spotted by Les Hughes, the chairman of Middleton Rangers Football Club, in Darlington, who challenged Mr Kuleszo to create a Polish football team.

He said: “I saw these guys in South Park playing football and they were all Polish. I said to them do you fancy playing a friendly game with our team?

“Due to the level of loyalty and commitment I asked the guys if they had any friends that would be interested in playing in a predominantly Polish team.

“They have never played for any professional teams and are a really good, strong team. I expect they will do really well.”

He added: “In their first league game they beat the team that finished fourth overall last year. They could one day be good enough to go into the Northern League.”

Mr Hughes believes the team is the only predominantly Polish squad outside of Poland.

“It came to my attention that there are 10,000 Polish people living in Darlington - that is 10 per cent of the population,” he said.

“They tend to keep themselves to themselves but I am hoping this team will inspire more of them to get involved.”

Mr Kuleszo has high hopes for his fledgling team, who won their recent match against Cargo Fleet AFC 3-0.

“I think we are one of the best in the league – we would like to win it,” he said.

The team is coached by Henryk Cackowski, a former professional player who has been based in Newcastle for the past year.

He said: “They have been getting better and better every week.”

The team is currently looking for sponsorship.

Middleton Rangers Football Club is also looking for women to play in its ladies only sessions.
