A FAMILY sports day will raise money for the emergency services which helped rescue children from a horrific bus crash.

Two drivers and 28 children were taken to hospital after two buses carrying children to school crashed at Oxhill, near Stanley on June 3.

Tomorrow (Saturday) a family sports day will be held at nearby South Moor Sports and Social Club to raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance, which airlifted some of the most seriously injured to hospital.

Sara Brophy, one of the event organisers, said: “Stanley has had so much bad publicity lately, it’s great to see that our community can pull together and do some good.

“The air ambulance is a vital service and you never know when you might need it, and lots of people choose to support them as they know the money is spent on a service provided in our area”.

The event takes place from 11am to 4pm at the club, with free entry and parking available.

Among the events will be a tug-of-war, priced £10 for a team of five people, a rainbow race priced £5 per person and a sponsored walk for little ones, as well as plenty of sporting activities for everyone to join in.

In the evening, local band PVC will perform, along with entertainment, bingo, games and a quiz. Tickets for the evening event are £2.
