POLICE are appealing for information after ancient armour was stolen from a church in Bamburgh, Northumberland.
The theft is believed to have happened between midnight, on Saturday, April 26 and 4.55pm, on Friday, August 18, at St Aidans Church, on Radcliffe Road.
"The offenders have climbed up ancient stone carvings behind the altar to take the items, causing damage to the stone work in the process," said a spokesman for Northumbria Police.
"They made off with a 17th century lobster pot-style armoured helmet, similar to a Civil War roundhead-style and a pair of ancient metal gauntlets or armoured gloves.
"These items have hung in the church for over 400-years and enquiries are underway to trace them and return them to their rightful place."
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the theft or anyone who knows of the items' whereabouts to come forward.
