AFTER the tragic news that entertainer Robin Williams has died at the age of 63, we look back at his most memorable roles.

1. Good Morning Vietnam

Williams' fast-talking style was perfect for the role of a DJ on Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War. This was his first Oscar nomination.

2. Good Will Hunting

A rare but welcome serious role for Williams, who played the stubborn yet empathetic therapist who was somehow able to help maths prodigy Will Hunting (Matt Damon) figure out how to handle his life. Won a supporting actor Oscar.

3. Dead Poets Society

Played an unconventional poetry teacher who taught his Vermont boarding school students to stand on their desks, think on their own, and "seize the day". Williams won his second Oscar nomination.

4. Mrs Doubtfire

Who couldn't love a bumbling father who dressed up as a portly nanny - with a latex mask, a wig and a Scottish accent - in order to spend time with his young children? A sequel was in the works.

5. One Hour Photo

Another serious role, and it was a creepy one. Williams played a photo counter worker at a huge suburban store who got a little too involved in the lives of his customers when he realised one of them was having an affair.

6. The Birdcage

Robin Williams took on the role of a gay cabaret owner for The Birdcage who, along with his drag queen companion, agree to pretend to be straight so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée's right-wing moralistic parents.

7. The Fisher King

Williams secured a third Oscar nomination playing a half-mad homeless man in The Fisher King, convinced that the Holy Grail was sitting in the Fifth Avenue abode of a billionaire.

8. Mork and Mindy

Mork from Ork. Nanu, nanu. What more needs to be said? This TV series, a spin-off from Happy Days, is how many of us first learned of Williams' sublime nuttiness.

9. Aladdin

Will it ever be possible to see a cartoon genie and not think of Williams? Remember him shooting out of that bottle: "Ten thousand years will give you SUCH a crick in the neck!"

10. Insomnia

Robin Williams starred alongside Al Pacino and Hilary Swank in this psychological thriller about two Los Angeles homicide detectives investigating a murder in an Alaskan town. (Video contains spoilers)

11. Awakenings

Awakenings tells the true story of British neurologist Oliver Sacks, fictionalized as American Malcolm Sayer and portrayed by Robin Williams, who discovered the beneficial effects a new drug had on catatonic patients.
